Some might argue that Spring is yet to appear here in Edinburgh (come on now, sun!), but worry not, our ‘Spring with Sketchbook’ Live Lesson has brought the sunshine!
You can read more about the lessons here and if you would like to see self-submitted drawings made by our young participants in lesson 1, we created this Padlet so that we could share them far and wide!
However, you may remember that part of this lesson included an optional competition, judged by resident RBGE artist, Jacqui Pestell. After thinking about how to brighten up their surroundings with nature, teachers could submit either drawings and/or videos to represent their class, and we were overwhelmed with choice. Take a look at some of the reasons children gave for choosing to draw their flowers:

“Our school and local area of West Pilton has a lot of concrete in the playground and no flowers.”
“The reason I chose the spot I did is because it is in my garden and that is wear is spend most of my time.“
“I chose the colours as they reminded me of living in Hong Kong.”
“I chose to draw this flower because I saw a photo of a flower that looked really pretty, so I drew it and adjusted it a bit after I listened to the live lessons.”
“My flower is a lily. I chose it because I liked the way the colours faded from a more intense pop of colour to a paler pink. It is like an ombré effect.”
“I drew this because I think it resembles that your imagination is really strong and colourful. At first I drew one flower but then I saw other ones so I got more ideas and put all of them in.”
Jacqui and Amy at the Botanics were so impressed with the creativity amongst our Edinburgh pupils, complimenting the line, composition, and colour choices of all the submissions.
We are pleased to announce that the following pupils have been awarded the prize of being on display in the foyer of the Royal Botanic Gardens from Friday May 10th to Monday 20th 2024, and in addition they will be gifted a book called The Big Book of Blooms, something that is sure to inspire even more drawing!
You can also see their creations on RGBE’s own site here (see Spring Showcase section) and we have also shared a video here on Clickview if you can’t make it down to the gardens.
