Given that Safer Internet Day falls on the February break for us here in Edinburgh, we wanted to make sure that our learners still had the opportunity to join in, and they really did – over 200 classes across the city!
The theme this year is Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online! and to help us to understand this, we followed the experience of Blue the Bird who found himself in a tricky situation when a pop-up appeared on his tablet tempting him to share his personal data in exchange for free seeds.
We also found out that some pop ups are a totally normal part of being online but some might be trying to trick or scam us, and its important to know what to do if we have accidentally fallen for a scam.

With guided conversation and plenty of opportunities to interact, learners of all ages were able to see that the best thing to do is always check with a grown up if they see anything that worries them online, and that includes random pop-ups. They wont always know what to do straight away, but they will know how to find out, such as going to My Family’s Digital Toolkit – Internet Matters for some advice and help.
If this has gotten you in the CRIS frame of mind, then remember we have a collated selection of resources here: Cyber Resilience and Internet Safety (CRIS) – Edinburgh Learns Digital
