Patterns in History: From Past to Present

Along with providing CLPL for our teachers in the form of Live Lessons, our team here at Edinburgh Learns Digital like to make connections with local places that our young people can explore for free in their own time.

Last week saw the beginnings of a new friendship with the National Museum of Scotland. They joined us for what we hope to be the first of many Live Lessons, where our learners were introduced to some of the 12 MILLION artefacts held at the museum. We used this as inspiration for creating motifs and patterns based on elements of these artefacts, using digital drawing tools. See our inspiration here: Patterns in History Resources – Edinburgh Learns Digital

We were joined by nearly 1500 learners, with 49 teachers from 30 different schools across Edinburgh!

Using Sketchbook as our tool of choice, the learners (and teachers!) learned how the Sketchbook app can be an excellent tool for creativity, easily creating patterns that can be repeated, enhanced, enlarged, shrunk, copied and then turned into something beautiful, like this piece from a pupil at Currie Primary!

In addition, the museum has provided us with a Pattern Hunter Trail that can be printed off and taken along to the museum should they choose to visit over the weekends or the upcoming summer holidays.
