You may have read articles recently talking about how the Information Commissioners Office are now encouraging parents/carers to teach online privacy like road safety, following their recent findings that 75% of parents fear their kids aren’t making safe choices online.
The good news is, we have plenty of resources in this area (both for you and your parent/carers) to help you stay ahead of the game:
- For Nursery, learning through stories works really well as you know, and this DigiDuck story is ideal for this topic: Digiduck and the Magic Castle
- For P1–3, Jessie & Friends cover this really well – specifically Episode 2 ‘Sharing Pictures’
- P4–5, Play Like Share is a playful, age appropriate approach to data privacy and many other online safety themes
- For P6s and P7s, we have a data privacy Digital Learning Unit (DLU) called My Data and Me. This set of lessons is designed to be used via their Class Notebook and covers data privacy with their school accounts, and takes their home devices/accounts into consideration too.
- A fantastic Data Privacy video was created by pupils at Clermiston Primary School and explains how the City of Edinburgh Council handles privacy and personal information, in very child friendly language: Pupil Privacy and Personal Data
- ClickView have some fantastic videos for Third and Fourth level learners around this topic: Data Collection and Privacy Videos & Resources
- For your Parents and Carers, we really recommend linking to the Online Safety section of our website: Cyber Resilience and Internet Safety (CRIS) for Parents and Carers. Specifically, we really rate these activities from Internet Matters: Online safety downloadable activities for families. And these Build and Talk Activities from Lego are particularly good for learners with additional support needs : Gaming Online Safety for Families | Official LEGO® Shop GB
And if you want more, take a look at our CRIS resources here: Planning for Cyber Resilience and Internet Safety (CRIS)
